MAKE THE BEST OF YOUR HOLIDAYS

MAKE THE BEST OF YOUR HOLIDAYS

It’s holiday season again and we all feel more relaxed and positive. However, animal owners have to consider that this is often a difficult time for their pets which can suffer a great deal of stress.

Many people are unaware of the effects that stress can have on an animal’s behaviour and how it can affect it’s health and wellbeing.

What are the causes of this stress?
-       Changes in diet
-       Travel sickness
-       Territorial changes (this affects dogs as well as cats)
-       Changes to the daily routine

Should your dog or cat travel with the family?
Cats and dogs are going to be very different.
Cats: are very territorial and it takes a lot of time and effort to adapt to a new environment, so it is advisable to avoid taking them out of their normal surroundings.
Dogs: are very attached to the family and once the travelling is over they adapt well and quickly. As far as possible, try to avoid being separated from your dog during holidays.

What kind of transport should be avoided?
Travelling in the hold of a plane causes a great deal of stress. Not only is your pet separated from you but the pressure and the temperature in the hold are different as well as it being very noisy.

Are some animals more vulnerable than others?
Of course, they are no different to people in that they all reacts differently in various situations.
With a completed questionnaire your vet will be able to determine if your pet is likely to be predisposed to suffer from stress and give you the best advice.
If you call in at our hospital we can help you complete the questionnaire (free of charge) and then provide all the information you need.
